The Village of Winnetka is one of the wealthiest places in the United States in terms of household income, and is the richest village in Illinois. It is located in Cook County and is conveniently located only 16 miles north of downtown Chicago. The population is just over 12,000 making it a pretty small town by Chicago Metropolitan area standards. Unlike in many surrounding areas, the Winnetka population has been steady for the past 150 years. It sits right along the coast of beautiful Lake Michigan and is located 650 feet above sea level. The Winnetka Public Schools System (District 36) has some of the best public schools in the nation. It consists of three elementary schools and two middle schools. Winnetka residents also attend New Trier Township, which was ranked 17th best high school in the country. There have been a lot of notable alumni to graduate from New Trier High School including Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy.
The Winnetka Park District operates and maintains 27 parks, which cover over 242 acres of land. As you can imagine, there is a lot of alluring and charming nature as well as wildlife to be explored. People come here from all over the Chicago area and beyond to admire the wild and tranquil nature, and stunning scenery. The Winnetka Park District also has three swimming beaches Tower Road Beach, Maple Street Beach and Elder Lane Beach) which include boat rentals on Lake Michigan, that are staffed with lifeguards and attendants from Labor Day through Memorial Day Weekend.
There are many activities in Winnetka for the members of its community. From the annual Winnetka Tree Lighting, to the Memorial Day Parade, to the Veteran’s Day Observance, which is a special remembrance ceremony with guest speakers, there is something for everyone.
